Pianist, composer, and educator Reggie Berg hails from the small town of Auburn, IN and has been performing professionally since age 9. Berg placed as a finalist in the 2016 Thelonious Monk Institute auditions and performed for Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Heath, and other eminent jazz artists. He can be heard on his own CD of solo piano compositions entitled, “My Spoken Heart,” Lynn Baker’s “Azure Intention,” Paul Mullikin’s “Fruition,” The Playground Ensemble’s “Dreams Go Through Me,” Vivian Li’s “Mississippi Waltz” and numerous other recordings. Berg’s greatest strength is his ability to navigate numerous genres with ease, whether performing or composing.  In just the past 5 months, Berg has toured as a jazz pianist with the Air Force Falconaires, performed on synthesizer and keyboards in an Incubus cover band and 70’s classic rock band, music directed Sondheim’s “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum,” performed as a soloist with the contemporary classical music group, The Playground Ensemble; served as a sight-reading pianist for opera and musical theater auditions, and lead “The Reggie Berg Trio” in various performances throughout Denver, CO.  Berg has worked alongside noted jazz professionals Endre Rice (Basie Orchestra), Don Byron (MSU Denver), Dave Devine (MSU Denver), studied with jazz gurus Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner, Luke Gillespie, Bill Dobbins, Harold Danko, and classical musicians Joel Lester (Mannes), Martina Arroya (NYC), and Sophia Rosoff (NYC).   

Dividing his career between performing and teaching full time, Berg teaches 20 private students during the academic year and enjoys working with students of all ages and abilities.  He has an all inclusive approach toward pedagogy; sprinkling technique, history, improvisation, theory, repertoire from any genre, and ear training into every lesson. Past teaching highlights have included being on faculty at Metropolitan State University (CO), music directing at Saint Peter’s University (NJ), coaching at the Lamont Summer Academy (CO), and being a theory tutor at IPFW (IN). Berg has also taught at Niwot High School (CO), Overland High School (CO), and and DeKalb Middle School (IN).  As a freelance pianist, he continuously performs in Colorado and the surrounding region with the Diamond Empire Band, Joe Smith and The Spicy Pickles, Jonathan Barlow’s Tin Brothers, Opera on Tap, and is currently assigned to 20 performances with the Air Force Falconaires Jazz Band in August 2017. Past performance highlights include performing Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire - as a sub! - with The Mannes Contemporary Chamber Players led by renowned theorist and new music expert, Joel Lester; performing with jazz pianist, Art Lande in the free jazz ensemble, “Funko Moderno;” performing an original composition entitled “Eyes That Sing” in duo format with saxophonist Bob Mintzer, performing an original composition on NPR’s “From The Top” at age 15, and performing with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic as a concert soloist at age 9.  

Prior to embarking on a full time freelance career, Berg studied at the Interlochen Arts Academy, The Eastman School of Music, Mannes The New School for Music, and The University of Denver; where he received his Bachelor of Music Degree in Classical Composition in 2010.  His mentors have included Bill Sears, David Remington, Bill Dobbins, Harold Danko, Luke Gillespie, Eric Gunnison, Chris Malloy, David Tcimpidis, and T.J.  As a touring musician, Berg has enjoyed giving performances at Colorado College, Boise State University, Utah State University, University of Wyoming, Nagoya School for the Arts (Japan), and has performed as a collaborative pianist at The Juilliard School, The Manhattan School of Music, Mannes, The Aaron Copland School of Music, and various other institutions. Berg’s compositional prowess has led to 22 performances of works for classical ensembles, ranging from electro-acoustic solo pieces to pieces for full orchestra.  He has written for film, arranged for small jazz and musical theater ensembles, worked as a copyist for method book to be published by Carl Fischer, and worked on the editorial staff of New York composer William Mayer’s 2014 opera. Always embarking on new avenues of learning, Berg currently works under the tutelage of music business coach/jazz violinist, Christian Howes.
